Officials of the court are sent to her house yet they don’t believe her claim that she doesn’t have to pay taxes. As it was long established by her father and Colonel Sartoris through a mutual agreement since her father had donated money to the town. Another example of this is when her neighbors conducted a meeting with Judge Stevens about the repugnant odor radiating from Emily Grierson’s home. Her neighbors suggested rudely just saying her house stunk and to do something about the house or send officials over to take care of it. The judge argued that they should show more respect for her since she is an elder and not to be audacious as to what they had proposed.

The story is told from Sonny’s brother’s point of view as we get an inside look into Sonny’s life. Rather than about Sonny’s brother who is unnamed in the story. Baldwin uses 1950’s post World War II Harlem as the setting for which the characters are placed in which at the time was rampant with Heroin and Jazz. He uses Jazz to symbolize free spirit and creativity which is essentially Sonny. For the brother he uses his job as a math teacher to compare to his straight laced personality as being the more responsible
