It's Time To Reduce Gun Violence In The United States

According to the Second Amendment in the United States Constitution, citizens of the country have the right to keep and bear arms. However, this topic has recently become more and more controversial. Some people state that guns are dangerous, therefore a simple citizen should have no use for one unless they have ill intentions. Others believe that guns are a necessary part of society for people to protect themselves and those around them. Lately, many debates have been held concerning this topic. Gun violence has become more widely spread throughout the United States, and people want to feel secure whether it be because laws prohibit the use of guns or because they can protect themselves using the same weapons. Actually, one study found that states and areas that do not allow concealed weapons to be carried on the body of a person have higher rates of gun-related murders (Gius). In such areas, criminals thrive because their victims have few to no ways to protect themselves. Throughout the twentieth century, the amount of gun ownership in the United States doubled; at the same time, murder rates decreased significantly (Sowell). States that passed laws allowing for concealed guns to be carried on a person have seen an average of an 84 percent decrease in the number of shootings with more than one victim ("Interview with John Lott, Author of More Guns, Less Crime"). As more people carry guns on themselves in an area, the gun-related crime rate in that area drops. If the goal is less violence, it has been proven that more gun ownership is the answer. Because criminals do not obey laws, the only people that will be restricted from owning a firearm if more gun control laws are passed will be innocent citizens.
