I went from struggling as one of the slowest readers in my class to receiving the highest grade out of everyone in my English class on my paper. At times I knew the material well, but was unable to demonstrate my mastery of the material on an exam due to anxiety. Through hard work, I have learned coping mechanisms for my anxiety, and my grades on my post-baccalaureate courses attest to the great progress I have made in this area. In addition, I am severely dyslexic. This too is an innate weakness that I have worked hard to overcome. While I developed into a voracious reader in 6th grade, it has taken longer for me to hone my writing skills.…

When asked to write about and describe myself I often have to stop and ask myself how would someone who knows me, describe me to someone who doesn’t know me at all. I feel unique would probably be the most fitting adjective for describing Robert Yamane. I enjoy being challenged and never walk away from a problem that I know I can solve. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

To me, writing has always been busy work and something that teachers only used to create grades. My writing experience in high school was very limited to one category in: practice AP essays. The writing I did in class was always preparing for AP exams and was very fact based. Most essays, such as history, were only used to show that I knew the material and weren’t graded on how good the writing was. I didn’t feel like I had any freedom to stray away from the format that the AP graders expected because I didn’t want that to affect my score.…
