Over the course of this semester I learned a lot about how to be a better writer in Foundations for College Writing class. I really did not know how to write a proper paper when I entered college and that was one of my biggest concerns. However, as the class progressed I learned the many different steps that happen while writing a good college paper. This class also taught me that there are other factors besides just writing that are crucial to writing a decent paper. In the beginning of this semester, when I first had to write a mini paper for this class based on a television show I did not know how to approach it and how to be able to properly answer the questions and other things. So I just wrote to the best of my ability and hoped that …show more content…
I learned that the first step to writing a paper is to answer the question the prompt asks and that answer is what becomes the thesis statement. I then would try and come up with the three main reasons that support my thesis statement by using the “because” statement saying that A is because of B. After I have my thesis statement and my three main reasons, I then learned that the next step is to go through my text or anything that I will be using to support my thesis statement and find quotes that support my claims. Once I have written down the quotes that support my three reasons then I just have to go back and write my paper while adding an introduction and conclusion. The important thing is while writing the first draft is to write it as it comes into your mind. It really does not matter if it makes sense or not because once you are done, you revise the paper. That process has made writing papers for me very simple, especially to someone who really did not have the foundations to write an adequate college

The way I move through my own writing process is simple. I always start with research on a specific topic that an instructor gives me. I’m that kind of person that loves to highlight the important details of someone else’s information so I can admire her or his work in my papers. Then after finding the right amount of work to compose my own paper I start out with a title page.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

It has been nine years since I have attended college and eleven since I have taken an English course. The first English Composition class I took in 2004, was very dry, and the expectations from what I remember were extremely low. We read excerpts, wrote reflection papers, and that pretty much sums it up. When I reviewed the classes needed for my current degree of interests, I immediately convinced myself English Composition would be the easiest way for me to ease myself back into college. My expectations were low only because of what I experienced before, and I felt this was the place to start in order to help bring my confidence up about returning to college.…

To me, writing is just ok, nothing special. It definitely isn’t something I get excited about. My first formal writing class was in 6th grade, where we followed The Institute for Excellence in Writing’s curriculum. My fellow classmates and I mainly wrote short, 1-3 paragraph reports on various historical topics. I did well in these classes, I just never really enjoyed the process of writing.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

compared to the ones in previous decades. It used to be that company rules were enforced to all and followed by everyone, yet now employers understand the constructs between the types of workers and make accommodations for the creative class. Kipp is an example of an employer who saw just how much emphasis the creative class puts on the individual. In order to truly keep the creative class happy and focuses on work, an employer cannot set rules for every member of the creative class and think they can be handled the same way. The work environment today is very different from the work environment in the past because now employers are prepared to listen to the needs and wants of the creative class.…

When I first arrived to this class, I was excited yet apprehensive about contorting my creative writing to fit poetic devices instead of writing in prose. The last time I had been in a poetry writing class was in middle school, and I was worried that this semester I would sound like an angsty teen spewing words every which way and cramming them with forced rhymes to fit the prompts. I was also wary of sharing my failed poetry with a classroom of my peers, but after being around their positive energy from the creative prose portion of this class, I felt better about opening up my work to them and I have found the amount of positive response and constructive criticism overwhelming and amazing. With the positive environment in the class, I felt that I was ready to approach poetry without too much judgement on my part.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay.
