In the nation, 71 percent (about 19.7 million) of college students in 2011 had a part-time or full-time job. Additionally, one out of five of the students worked more than 35 hours a week (O'Shaughnessy). Many students are forced to work during college because either they are saving up to take care of their financial debt after they graduate college or they are taking care of their immediate responsibility while attending college. However, working while in college will affect a student's life in a few drastic ways. Working college students may have to compromise their sleep patterns, they may also learn useful time management skills and compromise their social life. Working through college has a negative impact on students’ sleeping habits. I have personal experience with being so tired that I slept on the bus, in my class, and again during the bus ride home. I have I lost a couple of friends because I was always busy, either with work, class, or studying. It is very frustrating to lose friends because you want to be successful in life. High school friends are easily lost when students attend college. They're just friends because high school friends enjoy an activity but don’t really care about each other. Family friends are not lost, though. They want to see students strive for the best in college and actually provide a student with support. However, there are also new friends whom students meet in college who will help each other study and actually care for education.
Working while attending college has many positive and negative effects. The negative effects include exhaustion and loss of social life.
