Valentine’s Day History Valentine’s Day is a day for people to exchange gifts between loved ones. Over six countries celebrate Valentine’s Day, but what is the legend behind St. Valentines? What traditions came from his presence? Valentine’s Day is a time filled with love and mystery. Many legends have been told about St. Valentines. One legend says that Valentine was a priest. When Emperor Claudius II made the decision that solitary men made better soldiers than ones with wives and families, he forbid marriage for them. Valentine decided to protest the law and continued to marry young lovers in secret. When Valentine got caught, Claudius demanded him to be executed. Other stories advise that Valentine died for trying to help Christians escape strict Roman prisons. Before his death, it has been alleged he wrote a letter to a young girl he loved signed “From your Valentine,” a phrase that is still used today. Some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to remember Valentine’s death. Others say that the Christian church was trying to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia, a fertility festival …show more content…

By the middle of the 18th century, friends and lovers of all social classes would give each other small tokens of affection or handwritten notes, but by the 19th century, printed cards were replacing written letters. Now, Valentine’s Day is celebrated in Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Australia. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year. Valentine’s Day is special for many people around the world.
