What I learned about therapeutic recreation is that it is not only about activities it’s about the well-being of others and watching others achieves goals that they once couldn’t before. Sometimes in this world you get consumed with life and what life throws at you. Sometimes that can become your mindset and make you lose the real focus of recreation therapist. I fell in love with helping others and making others smile. That’s what my focus is on every day when I walk into the activity room. Many people would say baseball is America's greatest pastime but I would like to argue and say that chasing the “American dream” would be the greatest and most common pastime. What is the American dream? Well, the phrase was first coined by historian James Truslow Adams in 1931 within his book called “Epic Of America” but the idea behind the phrase is as old as the states themselves. The general idea of the American dream has typically stayed the same but each decade gives it their own little spin. For example the 1890’s “American dream” involved moving to America and making enough to support your family.…

Code of Ethics According to the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA), the code of ethics is used as a guide for promoting and maintaining the highest standard of ethical behavior. There are 10 different principles that ARTA follows but there were just a few that really stuck out to me when reading this and learning more about it that I would like to discuss. “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki and the article “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams are two articles loosely intertwined. The article “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki reasons the idea that part-time jobs are something that we should slack off in and are there to help us pass time. While the article “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams debates about how our most creative thoughts and ideas come from our moments of boredom, as well as how society’s modern day influences are the culprit for our lack of boredom. Both articles vaguely share a similar topic, boredom. “The Heady Thrill of Having Nothing to Do,” by Scott Adams is a more strongly written article than “Stupid Jobs Are Good to Relax With,” by Hal Niedzviecki.…

In the NPR story “Why Play Doesn’t End with Childhood,” Dr. Stuart Brown clearly defines what play is and how it can help adults to recess. It is very true that play is very necessary and important for adults to release all kinds of pressure from modern life and maintain their social wellbeing. I am well engaged in playing basketball – something that Dr. Brown would regard as play – and it helps me to relieve my stress, train my ability of teamwork and develop my analytical and strategic thinking skills. While Dr. Brown uses poker game as an example to clarify how a game can count as play – it depends on the meaning of the game to the player. For me, playing basketball is a play, because my goal is not just to shoot the ball into the basket, but also to enjoy the relief of running around and shoot, to work with other team players and to draw up a strategic plan to win a…

Thousands of Americans struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder, especially veterans returning from oversea warfare. With a rising number of veterans afflicted with this disorder, recreational therapy has stepped in to help pave the way for alternative treatment. Recreational therapy strives to reduce symptoms of PTSD while improving the emotional and social well-being of the patient (Colman, 2015, p.14). Gaining popularity among military veteran programs, recreational therapy has turned the heads of researchers who are curious of the direct benefits and the factors of its success. However, there is “little empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness or outcomes of recreation programs in meeting the needs of returning veterans and their…

Exercise: The Value of Exercise in Treating Depression Anxiety and depression are the two leading types of reported mental health illness in the United States. They are two sides of the same insidious coin, and affect around 40 million people each year, or 18% of the population. (ADAA) The advent of anti-depressant drugs has created a multi-billion dollar industry that argues medication is the most effective treatment for patients. In writing any paper I do my best to adhere to the rules and guidelines given to me in order to write the assignment as well as I can. The reason I choose to say my research paper is not exemplary is because there is always room for improvement, but I do believe my research essay over whether or not the benefits of playing football outweigh the risks is a successful paper. In my opinion my research paper felt like it stayed on topic and was easy for my audience to read, comprehend, and hopefully urge them to form their own opinion. My research paper is successful because it fulfills the course outcome requirements, analyzes my subject while supporting it with evidence, but may lack in other areas such as organization and logic.…
