I knew had to go live in a place where going to school was going to be easy for me. I had no where else to go and she was kind enough to take me in her Apartment with her family. I did not even have luggages or a car. All of my clothes were packed in plastic bags. I would always wake up early to ride with my friend to school. In my head knew that I was able to accomplish anything and I realized that my level of maturity was not where it was a couple months back. When all I was able to see was a dark tunnel. Everyone was proud to see me prepare for graduation. Even the principal at McGavock shook my hand and said, “What you went threw was not easy and I wish I would have known sooner, consider yourself a warrior who just won a battle.” I began to understand that people where proud of me and Knew that everything I went threw had taught me maturity. This was the year of 2016, and this was the year that my life changed; I was forced to grow up and learn how to be more independent. The first step to my seeking of independence was turning 16 years old and getting my driver’s license. “Black Hair” by Gary Soto has a specific line that reminds me of what an average day in high school for me was like, “The days were dull. I did what there was to do from morning until the bell sounded”. I usually felt this way because, like Soto in his autobiographical story he felt alienated from everyone around him. I am about to tell you my story of a time in my life where I felt shunned by everyone.…

High school was either going to help me make it or break it. Bell High School was not among the top high schools in my district. It was known for its high drop out rates, teen pregnancies, and gang violence. As I rushed to school attempting to finish my homework because I was not able to finish while babysitting, I always herd “Hey come take a hit “or “ look at this new product, try it out”, we all wanted to succeed, but nobody wanted to put in the time and effort to divert us from the wrong paths. Unfortunately, this led may students towards drug addictions and gang violence.…

For most students, the transition from middle school to high school is the evolution from childhood to adulthood. In my case, my middle school graduation was a quick transition for another reason. The first few months of my freshman year had my parents rushing my grandfather in and out of the hospital because of his failing heart. By this point my grandfather had battled off colon cancer, 3 heart attacks, and 2 open heart surgeries. At age 74 he was not a candidate for a heart transplant but he was able to get a defibrillator.…

I would also be constantly worried about my aunt and I would catch myself drifting off just thinking about her, hoping that she was okay. Junior year, I was determined to obtain a higher GPA and a better class ranking, and as a result I would skip out on family events when I had homework to do…
