Serial murder has become this bone chilling, scary movie material. However, it actually is not as scary as it is made out to be. When looking at the facts serial killers are human beings that have become mentally ill. Serial killing is not something that happens frequently. It has been noted that it is less than 1 percent of all murders taken place in a year. The thrill of this phenomenon first took place in the late 1880s with the first ever documented serial killer. He is most widely known for name Jack the Ripper, also for never being identified. There are suspects to who it could be, however it has never been narrowed down to one person. After this case it the interest of serial killing calmed down meaning it was not as popular. In the 1970s and 1980s the notorious serial killings of Green River Killer, Ted Bundy, and BTK (Dennis Rader). The film Silence of the Lambs renewed public interest of serial killings. The majority of the public even law enforcement only gets the information about the killings over films.
