Reflective Essay About My Second Language

Being judged is never fun, especially when you are in public. It is something that I hate looking back to because I was really hurt. I wish it never happened, but it did. I felt dejected at first, but after a while I snapped out of it. Let me tell you the one memory that involved literacy. The one time a man insulted me in a store because I did not speak my second language very well last year. First, let me tell you about my background. I was born here in Dallas, but my parents are from Ethiopia. My mother wanted my first language to be English, so I would not struggle in school, but my father had another agenda. Although he also wanted me to learn English first, he was determined to teach me Amharic as well, the national language spoken in Ethiopia. He taught me how to speak, read, and write Amharic. After a couple of months, I became fluent in the language. Although I was fluent in Amharic, I never really spoke it much. I only spoke it to my parents, but even then they would mostly speak English to me. It was not until I went to Ethiopia about twelve years ago that I really used the language. I was seven years old when I went and spoke nothing but Amharic there, but that all changed when we came back. I stopped speaking Amharic completely. I stopped because there was no one I spoke the …show more content…
I am Ethiopian and I was born in America and there is no shame in that. I may not speak Amharic very well, but that does not define if I am a true Ethiopian or not. I love everything about my country. I embrace everything my beautiful culture has to offer. A person who was not true to their culture would be ashamed and have hatred for their country, but that is not me. The man tried to hurt me and judge me by saying that I am not lover of my culture all because I do not speak Amharic fluently, but I know that no one can tell me who I am, a true Ethiopian. I know for a fact that I am true Ethiopian and no one can tell me

After learning the English language, it was difficult having to go back and forth from speaking English at school and Spanish at home. After so many years of learning the English language, you start to get lazy with having to translate everything while having a conversation. When I was in six grade, my PE coach made it clear to me that I wasn't alone, and I could accomplish anything I put the time and effort into. He was the football coach for Atascocita middle school. An African American in his late 20s, very friendly, and Guidable when it came to his students. Fortunately, I had my brother as a personal translator throughout the year.…

There are two very contrasting languages that I associate myself with. My native language is Haitian Creole, a language that arose among a nation of people that had a large impact on history. When I spoke my native language, I thought nothing of it, it held very little to no significance to me, until I lost it. My second language, English, is detrimental to my success in this world. I had to work hard to learn it, understand it and an even greater deal of difficulty having to speak it.…

Throughout the past few weeks of Studies in English Education, the main aspect that has been addressed is the term ‘multiliteracies.’ From completing this portfolio and attending each of the workshops, I have learned that to become a text producer I need to be involved with the variety of functions in language and literacy. Hill (2012) states that ‘to be multiliterate means to be literate in print-based and new communication technologies’ (p. 361). Such technologies include ‘electronic literacies, technoliteracies, digital literacies, visual literacies and print-based literacies’ (Hill 2012, p. 361).…

English 2010 has been a learning experience for me, I've been able to learn a lot about english that I did not know or work on before. With the first essay that we worked on I did a memoir I really enjoyed working on this paper, In class we were able to get freedom to add pictures to are pictures make it a little bit more creative I certainly was not used to this; I’ve been told my whole schooling experience that you have the intro and the conclusion and three body paragraphs. The memoir I was able to write to what I felt like I needed it to be, add pictures so it could appeal more to the eye when reading and also made it easier.…
