Defining Myth Many scholars interpret theories of myth differently. Because of the variety of tales told in myths, it is hard to narrow it down to one established definition. Its’ Greek origin suggests myths are stories narrated either by mouth or through other media such as art, drama, or music. For this reason, myths can be applied universally due to their broadness. Legends, folktales, and fairytales are often confused with myths and for that reason many who study mythology attempt to distinguish between them. For one to understand the true meaning of myth, it is important to know the different definitions of the term. He labeled dreams as the fulfillments of wishes claiming that the mind goes through what is called dream work. Dream work is categorized into three parts, which are: condensation of elements, displacement of elements, and representation of elements. These three elements are responsible for how wishes and desires become organized unconsciously. Freud’s further discovery included dream symbols and led him to study the way they related to myths. He made a connection between myths and music believing that it is important for both to have structure. Levi-Strauss thought that there was no right version of myth and just like society, all parts contributed to the myth as a whole. Like Vladimir Propp, Levi-Strauss believed that there were certain patterns in the stories that were unchanging. He stated that in every myth, there were two extremes that needed to be distinguished. Examples of these include things such as life and death or the hunter and the hunted. According to him, one of the myths important jobs was to mediate between the two.
