As for me, in 2011 my family and I traveled to the United States to look for a house to live in. My dad was offered a new job but the catch was that we had to move. This was extremely last minute, we had about four weeks left in Australia before we made the big move. My friends and family were stunned that we were moving away from them. For our last couple of weeks, we spent all of our time meeting up with friends, travelling to different cities to say our goodbyes to our relatives. All of them were shocked by …show more content…
1799 stanford avenue would be the house my family would live in for the next year. I went to Oak Knoll elementary going into the end of third grade year. My first day of school was horrendous, i didn't know anyone and i was too afraid to talk because of my accent, i would spend my lunches in the library and keep my head down during class, until one day in the Library a boy came up to me as he was me on one of the library computers trying to remove the permissions. He introduced himself and told me what was wrong. That was the start of a friendship that would last five years and continue today. We began to walk around the track, i started talking to new people, and would be more engaged during class. I found a liking to technology and music. Today those passions have created who i am. We also try to go back to Australia for as much time as possible to see family and friends. A few months later my dog got out of quarantine and our furniture arrived. It made America feel like home, though my family belongs in

Introduction Australia is a ‘receiving’ country and bears the responsibility as an international citizen to take in asylum seekers. The Parliament of Australia defines asylum-seekers as “individuals who have sought international protection and whose claims for refugee status have not yet been determined. Those covered [by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR)] refer to claimants whose individual applications are pending, irrespective of when they may have been lodged.” This differs from Australian Parliament’s definition of refugees. Asylum seekers have to be processed, and it must be determined if they are ‘genuine refugees.’…

Good Morning Mr Callanan and boys can I ask you a question… what does it mean to be Australian. Being Australian means that you are resilient, persistent and understanding while holding a free and egalitarian society with great importance. Being Australian means you’re not afraid to give something a go weather or not the outcome was is what you wished it to be. This Identity that has developed around us began in the 1920’s with the hardened Bushmen that persevered through the incredibly harsh environment that is Australia. The aspect of our Australian identity that I am focusing on today is the stereotypical persistence that most Australians can relate to.…

A universal theme for me moving from Texas to California is overcoming. I was 8 years old when my family moved, and had to overcome knowing no one, a new school, and being out of my comfort zone. At this age you tend to start making good friends, all hang out in groups, and be less adventurous. My parents kept saying, “Find people who like the same things as you, and everything else will be easy”. The next week I did just that.…

Every individual’s life experience is unique and dynamic, particularly for those of us who have journeyed far from our homes to establish new lives in foreign countries. “I’ve stopped thinking of myself as an immigrant”. Years fly by while we dream of going somewhere far away, spending hours zooming in and out of Google Earth, looking at the different places on Earth. “One day I head that I’m going to Australia, now, do I feel happy for having a great opportunity or do I feel sad for the homesickness that I know I will have there?”…

My series of rather challenging events seven years ago, when my family moved from Myanmar to the United States. I had just turned nine when my sister received news that she was accepted into UC Berkeley. My whole family was ecstatic as we prepared for our move to San Francisco. People tried to explain to me what it would be like to live on the other side of the ocean. Little did I know, San Francisco and Yangon were polar opposites - one a bustling, concrete city and the other a quiet, somber town.…

When I moved to Orlando, Florida, I was twelve years old. I did not know what to expect when it came to the Orlando weather, their school system or their people. My mom called me one day when I was on my way home from school and told me we would be moving, at the time I did not know where we were moving to, but I knew I was not going to be okay with moving away from my neighborhood friends who I have been friends with since the second grade. Once I came home, the majority of our house was already in boxes and I refused to pack any of my belongings because at the time I did not want to accept the fact that we were moving to an entire different state.…

For me it was a bitter sweet, i knew I would miss my new friends, but I was also excited to go back and be with my old friends and to have more family around me again. Everything was good when I moved back, however I think my mom realized that moving back didn't change the fact that her grandma was no longer here so we moved back to Florida almost a year later. Those two years had changed my life the most, I was forced to grow up and instead of my parents being there for me I had to be there for them. But not only did I grow up I was also able to build such an unbreakable bond with my brothers that I know will keep us close for the rest of our…
