I sat down on the dusty ground, finally resting my feet. I needed a momentary escape from the labor, and the boys who make my life hell. My papa says that’s not a word that respectful young men use, but how can I be respectful at a time like this? They shove me in dirt, spit on me, and kick me in my sides. I still have the bruises from the last time they beat on me. Black and blue, just like you hear in the stories. There was a spot in the distance coming closer. First a spot, then a blob, now, it’s a person; a boy. He was coming towards me, his features contorted into a proud look of determination. Was he coming to beat me too? He wouldn’t get far with the barrier of the fence between us, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t afraid. As he came into view, I saw him in more detail. He couldn’t have been any older than me, short brown waves around his face, fairly clean skin and clothes that had to be brand new. When he saw me, he smiled.
“Hello” he said cheerfully.

He is leaving. My only friend here, my last friend I will probably ever have. He is leaving and going back to Berlin. Wherever that is, it sounds very far away. We are supposed to have this final adventure together soon, but once we play together once, there will be no reason for him to come back. Right?
