Did you know that hot chocolate was considered holy by the Aztecs? It was believed to make people stronger. Cacao seeds were so valuable to Aztecs that they used them as currency. Mexican Culture is very complex. Like any other country, Mexico has holidays, a flag and history but what makes Mexico special is that Mexicans feel very passionate about their roots. We may even come off as cocky sometimes but it is only because we love our country and we want the whole world to know how proud we are to be from one of the culturally richest countries in the world. The most popular holidays in Mexico are Day of the Dead, Christmas and Independence Day. My personal favorite, Day of the Dead is celebrated on November 2nd. The Mexican flag is full of symbolism. It consists of three vertical stripes: a green one a white one a red one. An eagle is in the middle. The green represents our independence, the white the purity of the catholic faith and the red the blood of our heroes who fought in wars. The eagle is on a cactus devouring a snake. This image comes from an Aztec prophecy in which the Aztecs were told by their god to form a city where they found an eagle eating a snake. We are taught to love and respect our flag. In school, we are told the story of a boy named Juan Escutia who fought in the Mexican-American war, during a battle at the castle of Chapultepec, when he saw a group soldiers from the opponent army approaching the flag he took it, wrapped it around his body and jumped from the top of the castle.
