Learning to Love Reading I can hardly recall most of my childhood. I have had more concussions and brain trauma than I would like to admit, and it can pose many challenges; one of those challenges is remembering things from my past. This being said, there are key events in my life including reading and writing that stick out. I had never been too keen on reading or writing, and I was the type of kid that would never read or write on my own time. Even if a person does not like to read, they would be lying if they said at some point in their life reading had never done anything for them. I began reading at a much younger age than writing so we will start the story there. My first ever memory of reading started when I was in preschool. I want to say I was about five or six years old and my parents surprised me with a phonics early reading set. I was not entirely sure what to think at first, but once I had read the very first book in the set I was hooked. It had seemed like a …show more content…
I tried to mature more and act more like an adult. It was nearing the end of the year and the final book we were reading was The Great Gatsby. I tried to go into the reading with an open mind and enjoy it. I had my doubts at first due to the lack of science fiction elements, but for once in my life I wanted to enjoy a book for what it truly is. A work of art. Going into it with an open mind was the best decision I had ever made. I had completely forgotten about all of the bad books I had read and tried to recall the positives in them and not focus as much on the negatives. The Great Gatsby was the light at the end of the tunnel. It opened my mind and taught me to appreciate everything which led into my senior

My life has never revolved around writing, reading, but definitely not writing. To be honest, I’m not even sure when I learned to read and write, all I remember is the fact that I had the ability. In the first grade, I remember being in a church youth group where they wanted the high schoolers to do a play but wanted one younger kid to be in it. The age they had in mind was a kid who was in upper elementary or middle school, but my mom told them to let me try anyways. They decided to let me join the play, because they were impressed by how well I could read, I even helped the high schoolers memorize their lines and whispered them to them throughout the play.…

The most vivid memory I have of reading is when I was in third grade, my teacher use to read books to us at the end of everyday. However, one day she took us to the library and told us to pick out a book to read on our own. The library was set up to where each grade level had their own books so kids were encouraged to pick books that weren't to difficult for them to read. I wanted to prove that i could read a higher level book because I have dyslexia and other kids thought it was funny when I would mess up reading out loud in class or when I wrote papers. Therefore, I went to the fifth grade book cases and picked the biggest book I could find which was the original The Lighting Thief , before it got popular and they changed details in the book.…

I can remember learning to read as early as kindergarten, but before that, I was able to memorize repetitive words in children’s book or words that were a sing along. My mother taught me how to read. She would act out the words in the sentence like a scene in a movie. At first I wanted only to look at the pictures because the images conveyed so much meaning. I would take time to stare at the illustrations so I could try to determine what the sentence on the page was about, but my vocabulary was limited.…

Was there ever a time you didn’t like to do something, but as you got older you started to love it more than you did as a child? When I was younger, I never liked to read, but now as I have gotten older, I read more and more different kinds of books and novels. My mother put my sister and me into a reading program in elementary school because our reading levels were lower than they should be. There were no criteria so we read books that were interesting to us, like the Given Tree by Shel Silverstein and Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. When we finished reading them we would go around and talk about the book we read.…
