This I Believe Gender discrimination has caused a variety of problems within our lives. I believe that All genders should be treated as equal. No gender is stronger than another or smarter than another. Girls, boys, and any other gender out there are all created equally. People’s choices decide their fate, not their gender. I believe that women are just as capable as men, and should be treated with them same amount of respect. The idea that women have to do something purely because they are a women is ridiculous. During the time period Fences takes place in, gender roles were much more dominant. When the main character and his wife, Rose and Troy were married they both played their parts in the marriage. Rose took care of the home and cooked up dinner for her family. Troy worked and brought some money for the family. When Rose discovered that Troy was having an affair; she wanted nothing less than to end their relationship all together. Back in those times a women was unable to end marriages like a man could. Rose was forced to remain stuck with her cheating husband until his end. Alberta, the girl he was having an affair with, was also portrayed heavily by gender roles. When being describe she was overly sexualized, and throughout the story she did not have much purpose. It’s almost like her purpose was to just have Troy’s child then die. In a society where men are idolized and women are belittled, progress will come much slower than if all genders worked to their full potential. Rose is a strong character even after she discovered that Troy had been cheating on her. Her strength and anger could not be shown fully due to the gender stereotypes holding her back. I believe that no one should have boundaries because of their gender. I believe equality is the key to peace, and equality can not be achieved without ridding society of
