The play “The Crucible” in the year 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts people were accusing others of “witchcraft”. People in this era were very christian. This all got started when they found the girls in the woods dancing naked. These girls then acted up and then were blaming other innocent people of witchcraft in order for them to get out of trouble. This then lead to deaths of the people. Although, people couldn't have done anything to the the hysteria in Salem Elizabeth, Parris, and Abigail could have told the truth and none of these innocent people would have had their lives taken. Even if people tried to end the hysteria in Salem nobody could stop the hysteria.
“You drank a charm to John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor”( Act 1, Line 19, Betty). This quote that Betty states is a solid example of how Abigail is very selfish on how much she wants John Proctor and what extent that she will go to have him. This proves that she can be as evil as the devil just for her own needs or wants. She was lashing out on John Proctor because of the things he did. This quote then gives proof on how the devil was not the main problem in this play it was the characters responsibilities and actions. He wildly expresses that he doesn’t want to ruin his reputation because reputation is a “social standing tied to one’s ability to follow of religious rules “ (shmoop.com) this expresses that reputation and responsibility and respect is the main concern for all of these characters. They don’t want to bad rap because it is showing that they have no respect and no responsibilities and it is tearing them down. Reputation is the only way that you can get people to talk to you or to do business with you were to have any respect for
