I am aware that this is not enough for this job and I want the opportunity to train so I can support, empower and provide women centered care that promotes not only safety but also informed and unbiased choice. Training for the Health and Social Care NVQ certificate and diploma in the workplace made me aware how to deliver an excellent level of care, develop a clear understanding of my role and also to create a healthy environment for myself and those who I care for. Over this course I have become competent with many skills: good communication and observation, handling information, safe care, …show more content…
Being a healthcare assistant taught me to prioritize and be flexible in my work due to unpredictable nature of job. I have enjoyed the fact that no two shifts were the same and look forward for this challenge in midwifery.
Reading journals and books related to the field gave me an ample overview about midwifery.
`Journal of a student midwife`, `Myles textbook for midwives`, SMNET and MIDIRS website helped me develop a better understanding about this career not only that is rewarding but also physically and emotionally demanding. One of my specialist subject interest is `Language barriers and their effect on outcomes`, as a lot of women does not speak English. Birthright organisation stated that language barriers can lead to a poorer quality care and are challenging for the healthcare professionals. In obstetrical and gynecology where emergencies are common and urgent consent is required an interpreter might not be there on time. I speak
Romanian and feel I can be very useful in my local community as a midwife.
I realise that midwifery is a very competitive career to enter and I would like the chance

Ballard composed concise daily entries that chronicle her domestic work, deliveries and nursing, as well as community events. These entries, coupled with Ulrich’s extensive archival research, show the complexity of the female economy and its interactions with the mercantile economy of the late 18th century. Ulrich presents the masculine and feminine economic interactions through the analogy of a checkered cloth. As the weaver wove together white and blue thread, squares of white, blue, and intermixed squares emerged.…

There are clear links between cultural competence, improved quality of patient care and eliminating radical and ethnic disparities in healthcare (Walker and Barnett, 2007). The cultural competence development model (Papadopoulos et al, 2006), aims to provide a detailed framework for the development of culturally competent nursing, by combining the four stages of cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity and cultural competence. The first stage, cultural awareness, highlights our own self-awareness and cultural identity in order to identify the subtle differences between cultures that define our uniqueness and individuality (Papadopoulos et al, 2006). Cultural awareness is more concerned with the appreciation of the external signs of diversity such as physical characteristics (Purnell and Paulanka, 2008). In this case healthcare professionals need to be aware that English may not be Suzie 's first language and adjust accordingly by slowing down speech and ensuring she understands what is being said.…

Midwifery has fascinated me from an early age. The process of how something so minuscule can grow into something so beautiful as well as knowing that as a midwife I have played a part to bring that most beautiful thing into the world excites me. Having the chance to provide that support through pregnancy, to the birth and then postnatal stages of a special time in a person 's life and guiding them through it is what draws me to become a midwife.
