Esperanza's Way Of Life

Esperanza feels very upset about the way that she lives, and this is partially due to how other people view her family’s way of life. For example, the nun at her school calls Esperanza out for being a child of low socioeconomic status; specifically, she makes Esperanza feel inferior to the other students because she lives in a very run-down part of town. The nun says, “That one? she said, pointing to a row of ugly three-flats, the one even the raggedy men are ashamed to go into. Yes…even though I knew it wasn’t my house and started to cry” ( Cisneros 45). Furthermore, Esperanza says the following about how outsiders (people who are not from her neighborhood) perceive her way of life: ““Those who don’t know any better come into our neighborhood
