Analysis of evidence: In other words, when CIsneros writes “Why didn't you hear me when I called? Why didn't you tell them to leave me alone?” Esperanza is expressing how serious she felt about what had happened. It shows that Esperanza was counting on Sally to be there and help her but Sally was too busy with another boy. Similes help Esperanza, and a lot of people, to compare situations or items she comes across. Another instance where Esperanza envys something large and wishes it was her dream house was the following. She was describing her neighbor's house and said she owned “a building as big as whale”(Cisneros 12). If she calls a building a whale it is most likely positive since whales are usually seen as majestic. Esperanza growing up throughout the story shows the reader how a new scenery and different characters can affect a person’s perspective on their life and on other’s lives. Esperanza brings out a brick in hopes of saving Sally from the boys, but Sally does not want to be rescued because she is flirting with the boys. Esperanza says that she does not understand why they laugh and “it was a joke [she does not] get” (Cisneros 96).
