Espanola is a small town where I am from. Since I’ve lived there, I never came across someone where I thought to myself, “Wow I want to be just like that guy!” I’m a highly misunderstood individual, and it might sound like I’m throwing people under the bus. I’m not saying I’m better than anyone else, I just learned to follow my own steps.

To experience a local aspect of Hispanic culture I visited the Tienda Mexicana La Guadalupana, a grocery store in Chapel Hill. Once inside, the term that came to mind when looking around was bodega. The store was small, but made clear use of its space, with items on the walls, shelves, and even the ceiling. They commonly have bright lights; light, colorful walls; ads and signs everywhere with directions and promotional deals; and music playing over loudspeakers.…

Most people believe “El Chupacabra” is a myth while others don't. Although many have claimed that they have seen it, they don’t have proof. It may just be some stray dog, or canine-type creature. In the early twentieth century, the immigration of Mexicans to the United States was greater than ever. Due to the industrial growth at the time, Mexicans were invited by the United States government to immigrate to the United States and work. As many crossed the border in search of the higher wages that much of Mexico’s current economy could not offer them, this pattern of immigration was put into reverse by the Great Depression with the number of…

For the learn something new project, I thought it would be a great opportunity to try to learn Spanish since it has been a language I wanted to learn for years. As a future educator, I want to help as many people as possible, which I can do if I have the skill of speaking Spanish. I am currently fluent in English and Arabic so adding another language would give me the chance to reach a wider group of people. Considering this, the numbers of Latinos in America are growing every year, making it important for me to help people who speak the second most common language in the country. Throughout this process, I was able to apply course material, helping me realize what works and doesn’t work for me as a learner.…
