Escherichia Coli: Urinary Tract Infection

Escherichia coli and Me
The disease/infection that I have chosen is the urinary tract infection, commonly known as the UTI. Depending on where the infection occurs, there are two specific names. If the infection occurs in the lower part, like in your bladder, it is called Cystitis. If the infection travels up towards your kidneys, it is called Pyelonephritis (Umm/Health). The microbe that causes this infection is Escherichia coli, more commonly known as E. coli. It is found commonly in healthy people and normally not harmful (Mayo Clinic E. coli).
UTI symptoms may very person to person, even from male to female. While urinary tract infections are most commonly in women, men can also develop them. Some symptoms include painful urination,

Last summer I went to pick up my daughter, her grandmother looked at me and said that I didn’t’ look good. I told her that I hadn’t been feeling good that day and that I had developed a severe pain in right mid back. She said that she would keep Bella for the night and allow me to relax. Here I had just moved into my apartment and thought that maybe I had pulled a muscle and that’s why I was in pain. When my boyfriend came home, I asked him if he could go buy a thermometer because I thought I was feeling a little warm, although my body had the chills and I was under three blankets. He came back with the thermometer took my temperature and sure enough, I was running at 104.1. To the E.R. we went and that is when I found out that my UTI had then reached my kidneys. I was in the Pyelonephritis stage. I had a fever, the shakes, lightheadedness and a sever amount of pain. They gave me some antibiotics, gave me my discharge instructions and was told to return if the symptoms did not improve. I waited two days, and I still had a fever over 103 degrees. Back to the E.R. I went. Although they never admitted me, I was there for nearly 24 hours the second time. They would not let me leave until the fever had broke.
My experiences with this infection, has affected me in so many ways. It has finally led me to the path of having to see an Urologist. The problem

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there was “A 6 percent increase in CAUTI between 2009 and 2013; although initial data from 2014 seem to indicate that these infections have started to decrease” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015, p. 1). These statistics indicate interventions implemented to prevent the incidence of CAUTIs were effective in 2014. Unfortunately, there is still an estimated there are more than 13,000 deaths associated with Urinary tract infections in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,2015, January).…

coli is the known culprit of three infections in the human body, urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis and intestinal diseases. There are 5 classes that cause intestinal disease, ETEC, ETIC, EHEC, and EAggEC. EHEC is the most common, and has symptoms easily distinguishable from the others. The antigenic types of E. coli are based on 3 antigens; O, H and K. These antigens are proteins our body distinguishes as foreign, and our body’s immune response responds to rid of the foreign bodies. E. coli O157:H7 is named according to the antigen markers found on the bacteria’s cell surface.…

Thus, these bacteria indicators are easy to identify and safe to work with in the laboratory and their presence provide an evidence of fecal contamination. The fecal category contains both pathogenic and nonpathogenic bacteria. For instance, Escherichia coli or E. coli is a fecal Coliform bacteria. Therefore, the presence of fecal Coliforms is an indicator of fecal contamination and of the potential presence of bacterial pathogens. However, “the intensity of other indicator bacteria (total Coliform, fecal Coliform, and fecal streptococci) is a degree of water safety for body contact recreation or for…

According to Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, Bucher, and Camera (2014), pyelonephritis is defined as inflammation of the renal parenchyma, collecting system, and renal pelvis. Pyelonephritis can be categorized as acute or chronic. Acute pyelonephritis, the more common type, usually results from colonization and infection of the lower urinary tract that if left untreated can ascend through the urethral route and infect the kidneys (Lewis et al., 2014). Chronic pyelonephritis occurs when the kidneys are frequently infected causing the kidneys to become small, atrophic, and loose function from all the scarring (Lewis et al., 2014). Also, with chronic pyelonephritis the extent of the scarring depends on the amount of past infections and how severe…

When these bacteria or pathogens enter the body they may cause infections, especially in hospital settings. The urinary system is used for our body to produce urine as a way to help our system to get rid of waste and extra water that we do not need.
