Foreword
5. Quotation “He seemed relieved to be correcting a story he felt had become a kind of prison” (xiii).
The author reveals that some parts of the books are false. Due to his horrific life and trauma, Shin Dong-hyuk, the protagonist, has been telling an untruth version of his story ever since he arrived in South Korea in 2006. Because of this, Shin begins to tell the truth and correct his lies and mistakes. This reveals Shin’s honesty and courage. Even though there will be false information, I still feel like the story reflects his journey and will still have a great plotline.

Connection
Shin discovers North Korea’s caste system when he witnessed being bullied by the guard’s children. Just like the other caste systems, North Korea’s top tier is consisted with the wealthy, while the bottom tier is consisted with the poor. In addition, people are usually born into their classes accordingly to their parent’s status and it is often difficult to gain status.
Chapter Four:
1. Comment
Shin witnessed the death of his brother and mother. The reason for their death was attempting to escape. When he was interrogated by the officers, Shin was confused and did not admit anything about their plan. He was then taken to see a front row view of their deaths.
Chapter Five:
4. Question Why did Shin snitch on his family?
In the true story, Shin admits that he ratted his mother and brother out for food. After eavesdropping his brother and mother, Shin heard that they were trying to escape and he told the guards about their plans. When he was taken to see his family, he was not confused at all. He was one of the prisoners that was hated amongst the others because he was loyal to the guards. I do not blame Shin for doing this because needed to survive.
