Sadly, a significant portion of this food never reached the intended population. Corruption took roots in the country, and the state started running global insurances scams to extract money from the natural disasters and fake industrial accidents. The Reinsurance companies came to realize that they had been conned and stopped doing business with the North Korean government.
The story of Shin can be seen as one in which there is no mentoring and guidance even though he had the opportunity to be mentored and learn about the outside world while still in the camp. Some of the major characters that helped Shin to plan an escape, during the escape and his journey to the western world include his parents, the pig farmer in the province of China, the teachers at the camp, Kyung Soon Chung, relief and aid agencies in the South Korea, Park Yong Chul, ‘uncle’, Harim Lee, the author (Blaine Harden), and Lowell and Linda Dye.

He is one of the minor characters because they are rarely given time to interact with their families. In fact, they are forced to live in the dormitories with co-workers in which they are given very few moments to visit their families. Shin is arrested and tortured because of the crime committed by his brother. After the mother and son had been executed, he tried to be near his son so that he could guide and mentor him while still in the camp. To his surprise, the son refuses to talk to him. “At the mention of his father’s name, Shin became angry. Although he had tried to repress it, the resentment he felt toward his mother had grown since their deaths. It had poisoned his feelings for his father. Shin wanted nothing to do with him.” (Melanie) Even though Shin is willing to guide his son in the right direction, he is not interested.
Park Yong Chul
Park Yong Chul plays a major role in guiding and mentoring Shin after the family is executed. He is the one who is responsible for the escape of Shin from the labor camp.
