Running Away: A Short Story

Improved Essays
The writer Richie Norton once said, "To escape fear, you have to go through it, not around." In my case that is exactly what I did. The fear of my father drove me down the road, down a path I never thought I would be. However, little did I know, I was running straight into my fears, not around. The day I left home, I was hurting emotionally. My father had verbally abused me, and I was not having it any longer. So, I ran away. But within my fear I found relief, I found my salvation. The feeling of running away, then being locked away in an eight by four concrete cell away from all of my troubles, was a sense of relief.

There are only a few stores and a stop light. As I rode into town on my bike, I stopped at Dollar General, just to dig in the dump to find something eat because I hadn't eaten anything since 12pm the day before. All I found was a half drunken Mountain Dew. I could feel my stomach eating and tearing at my back bone from hunger. Then I gave up I couldn’t seem to find anything to eat. I was too ashamed to ask anyone for something to eat. My pride was not allowing me to get over the fact that I was homeless, and I had nowhere to go. So, I quickly jumped like a rabbit, running from a dog, out the dumpster and on to my bike. As soon as I was a few hundred feet away from the Dollar General, I slowed down. As I passed an old man mowing his grass with a push mower, I asked him if he needed any help, but he was quick to reply, " No not today." Since the old man didn't need any help, I decided to continue …show more content…
I stopped to sit on a fence to watch them. One of the guys looked like he could have been a hard-core rock star. He had the long hair, slim face, and slim figure. On the other hand, one of his friends was well over two hundred and eighty pounds. So, I sat there about thirty minutes watching these guys playing basketball. Then I got up off the fence, grabbed my bike and walked away. As I turned my back the one kid who looked like a rock star called out " Hey! Bruh wanna play." I replied back, “No thanks I think I'll pass pa". As I walked away, I went to the baseball field right next to the basketball court. There was a young couple and their adopted son, they asked me out loud “do you want to hit the ball one time.” So I thought to myself why not. So I stepped up to the plate, placed my feet in position, then nodded my head signaling that I was ready. So I took a deep breath then whappppppp! the ball goes flying, then in the distance I see the ball land on the other side of the fence about two hundred yards out. Out of amazement the family looks at me an asks “have you ever played baseball son” with a big grin I said “No.” for the first time ever hitting a baseball, I was amazed myself. But after all the fun I was having playing baseball the time came where the family packs up their belongings and gets ready to leave I grab my bike and walk to the bathroom.
