Symbolic Interactionism focus is on wanting to understand society. They focus and argue on the micro, the small day to day interaction with peers, groups etc. The way we engage in things and the way we do things. Symbolic Interactionism argues that human behavior is not an objective fact. You attach the means to what people do. The emphasis is on habits, the norms that build society. Society depends on symbolic culture, language and meaning, which examines the roles of people day-to-day interaction. The workplace environment, I recall observing behavior was of a detention facility.

One new employee, who was observed working with the residents, was timid, provided no redirection for the residents that were not following the rules, was standoff ish from the other worker, and showed low confidents in their role was disrespected , mocked, and talked about among the residents. It was not until the senior staff that spoke with authority, sternness, and confident addressed the resident’s behavior that they all readjusted their behaviors. Using Goffman concept ways in which employees use symbolic interactionism to imply submission is by their role expectations. During my observation, you often see staff monitoring the residents engaging in group’s activity, and placing themselves in proper position when certain supervisors are around. What I notice was that when supervisor are not around employees tend to be more laid back, talking among each other. According to Cuzzort & King, 2002, “We may attempt to upgrade or downgrade ourselves, but in doing so we conform to a conception of how such upgrading or downgrading should take place”. (p. 164).
