“Status Update” Reflection Everyone presents themselves differently depending on the situation in order to be accepted by society. Sociologists have studied this behavior in order to better understand the way people interact and the thought process behind a person’s personality. One of these sociologists, Erving Goffman played a major role in developing a theory known as the Dramaturgical Approach, which is the concept that one’s everyday social interactions are dramatic scenes played out in theatre, also known as “life”. One of these perks pertains to materialistic and shallow lifestyles that Nehisi adopts, which in turn portrays the “self” that he is presenting. Neil Drumming talks about the change he has seen in his friend when it comes to where their friend group meets for Sunday brunch, the way he views people who do not live the same lifestyle he does, and even the change of working out. Impressions management is presented by Ta-Nehisi when he talks about the new lifestyle he chooses to live now that he is famous. Gossip magazines, newspapers, and social media all take appearances very seriously when it comes down to how celebrities live and Coates does not want to disappoint. The pressure from the media and society has definitely had an effect in how Ta-Nehisi sees the norm of a celebrity and the behavior typical for someone of that social
