In the managing Emotions in medical school: student’s contacts with the living and the dead by Allen C. Smith, III and Sherryl Kleinman, there are a few things discussed. One of the things that we in countered were the student’s problems. In managing Emotions in medical school student’s contacts with the living and the dead by Allen C. Smith, III and Sherryl Kleinman, they talked about how a lot or most of the students had trouble with the fact that they had to encounter many different human body’s; for example living bodies, not living bodies, heavier bodies, and thinner bodies. A lot of the students at first would have some very uncomfortable feelings, such as embarrassment, disgust and many other feelings. So, we are expected to put on a costume and act different when in front of the audience. Erving Goffman saw these habits our society had so he developed the ideas of different reigns. Erving Goffman had to parts to his theory, front reign and the back reign. The deference between the front reign and the back reign would be front reign is like the every day life we live, and the back reign is what would be behind the curtain if you will, the things we don’t let everyone see. Front reign would what we do in our everyday life, we typically spend most of our lives on the front reign, we are constantly trying to please people with the things we do during our days (it really is as if we are preforming for people.) An example of front reign in my life would be my job as a nanny; I am always in front of the children I nanny.     I found Leslie Jamison’s writing very engaging and personable, because she isn’t overly formal in her speech and she uses numerous similes to make her experiences relatable to others. Although her job is fairly serious, considering she must follow strict guidelines and she plays a crucial role in the developments of young doctors’ careers, she speaks colloquially as if she is in a friendly conversation.
