Gregory and Sampson did not want to start a fight, they were scared to fight the whole time and when they got caught biting their thumb at the montagues they denied it. Benvolio tried to stop the fight but was unsuccessful. This error started a riot in fair verona and even the fathers of Romeo and juliet got involved within it. The two instigators were just trying to talk badly and insult their rivals while getting away with it. It was an error on their part because they were caught and they made things even worse between the families. This also made the prince get involved which made him give the families only one more chance which would cause more problems later in the story and is one of the reasons that the bad ending of this play has to happen. There is so many exaggerations it is almost unbelievable and comedic. The first example of one of these exaggerations is when romeo is talking of the sadness he is feeling after the loss of his first love Rosaline. While talking of his sadness with Benvolio he states that “This is not Romeo. He’s some other where.” He is being so dramatic trying to say just because he lost one girl his former self will forever be gone. The lovers are so young that when they talk about things like love it is obvious that they are not grown enough to understand and express it. Another example of the farce writing within the play is after Romeo is banished from verona. He speaks of life outside as hellish and unbearable. He has no actual reason that life outside is bad he is once again just exaggerating his emotions. The final example of this that I will give is how he talks of Juliet. Every word he says about her is an overblown and grossly exaggerated. Whenever he speaks of her it is always about how perfect she is and how he can not live without her. Most people would not be this infatuated with a person that quickly. Love is not an instant thing and marriage does definitely not happen that fast.
