In the scene where Dr.Larch revealed he performed illegal abortions, I did not think much of it compared to those around me. This is because I believe that abortions should be available to those who have made the choice to not have a child. But after a second thought, I realized that although I have my stance, perhaps it is still morally wrong to do it in that time period. Cider House Rules takes place in a time period where abortions were still illegal which means Dr.Larch is breaking the law. Though I still find it reasonable for the doctor to perform these illegal acts to prevent so many orphans, I still need to consider the opinions of those who do not agree with his side job. In the book Beyond Feelings, it is explained that people have the tendency to “lean in one direction or another” but it can cause error if one unfairly considers evidence and favor those that confirm their opinion (Ruggiero 115).
