With the invention of the Internet has come with the creation of a whole new way people express their creativity. A common form of expression on the internet is through the use of fan made content, including things such as fan fiction and memes. Many of these memes are about making the film seem even more absurd through editing the film or its trailer. The making of these videos has created a new following and fandom for the film, where thousands of people create, share, and watch videos that are edits of the Bee Movie. These edits are creative and inventive as well, as each is different and is edited in an unexpected way. For example, one edit is titled "Bee movie trailer but every time they say bee Shrek Movie trailer appears a little bit more" (Nikko, 2016). Not only is this a creative concept for a video, but it also involves a fair bit of editing to create the video. The majority of the edits involve odd concepts such as this that also involve a similar amount of editing. All of these user created videos are changing what the movie was intended for in obvious ways, simply because they are editing it from the original intended format. In James Gleick’s article What Defines a Meme, memes are compared to complex organisms that could self-replicate and evolve within or between hosts. Like genes, memes can be furthered by natural selection; while the former needs a physical medium, the latter is abstract and constantly changing (mutating). Memes “exploit” human brains, languages, the Internet, and all kind of mediums to advance its own survival. Gleick argues that memes are as powerful and destructive as virus and epidemiology, while people are made to think that they are benefiting from memes and are compelled to keep spreading them. In the end, Gleick concludes that as much as people hate to admit, it is people who are enslaved by memes.…

The Joy of Stats Nishant Sinha Kennesaw Mountain High School The Joy of Stats One statistical trend I could identify from Dan Hillman’s film The Joy of Stats was the growing difference in the quality of life between eastern and western countries for a span of about 138 years, beginning in 1810. The primary cause of this trend was the industrialization of western countries such as England and the United States, leading to higher life expectancy and greater income (Mayr, 2017). Following the growth of the quality of life gap, a contradictory trend began in 1948 when the practice of colonialism ended. Since then the quality of life gap between eastern and western countries has been decreasing due to the increased export of valuable resources such as oil from developing countries (Hillman, director, 2010).…

Depression is another one of those “first-world” problems us humans face as a society. Although it seems like a deathly globe-renowned issue is in mainly todays -mostly in teens- current society, Sue Monk Kidd demonstrates how depression may have affected those over fifty years ago- especially the South-American colored people of the Civil Rights Era in 1964. In The Secret Life of Bees, May, an oddly complex character, changes in the novel because of her depression. May is often portrayed as a very gentle, compassionate and selfless character, who immensely feels the suffering and pain of others on an emotional level because of the death of her twin sister. She changes into a character who is selfish and neglectful as she isolates herself,…

Many luxuries are granted to the citizens of the U.S. such as technology that helps us get through the day. These luxuries are not available to people in other countries and I believe that if I had to step into one of the four children in the movie On the Way to School I could handle living Carlos’s life. Carlos lives in Argentina and is 11 years old which is near my age, but that is the only thing we have slightly in common. We live completely different lives and Carlos does not have all the luxuries I have. Out of the all the other kids Carlos is the most modern of the four his clothes are similar to mine and he lives in a small house made up of bricks.…
