Ernesto Galarza wanted to immigrate smoothly into America, by learning English. Stanley Pearce wanted to strike gold to become rich and support his family. Also, Farah Ahmedi wanted to escape Afghanistan with her family. These may seem like very different stories, but they all share something. All three were all working toward a better life in a different or successfully become "American."
The mission that Ernesto Galarza undertook was to successfully become americanized and learn English because he wanted to become a good person and live up to Miss Hopley and her teachers as quoted when ”Miss Hopley and her teachers never let us forget why we were at Lincoln: for those who were alien, to become good Americans [...]” (Galarza 16). Ernesto is also on his way to being successful because he is taking learning as a positive experience. Also, his teacher’s teaching style is beneficial to Ernesto and he loves Miss Ryan because”[...] Miss Hopley and her helpers warmed knowledge into us [...] (Galarza 16) and “[...] I had fallen in love with Miss Ryan.” (Galarza 14). His goal was also worthy and necessary because it would greatly improve his immigration progress and completing this goal let him know that becoming an American doesn’t mean you’re ashamed of your native race, and in his case, Spanish. Ernesto knew that “becoming a proud American, as she said we should, did not mean feeling ashamed of being a Mexican.” (Galarza 17). These people learned to not abandon yourself, don’t focus on the unnecessary, and not all missions are safe.
