One great thing Hemingway did, was that he was a war veteran and lived through 5 great wars. Nick loses many things in his life but he does not fully recover from each loss. He is now emotionless and unable to keep a relationship with a women. His past troubles ultimately corrupt him emotionally and he feels forced to break up with his girlfriend, Margo because of this. Now he is alone and will have trouble in the future with other women. “"Did she go all right?" Bill said. "Yes," Nick said, laying, his face on the blanket..."How do you feel?", "Oh, go away, Bill! Go away for a while."” (Hemingway, ). He is facing an internal war and he is conflicted on whether to give up his love for manhood or stay with his love. He ultimately decides to let her go and he feels remorse after. There are always consequences of our choices. You never fully return to the same thing you left. Some things will always be different and you will almost always loose
