When we see the type of materials they used, Chang uses ink and color on paper whereas Ernest uses oil paint on canvas. Different types of principles of design are highlighted on both works. In Earnest’s Mountain lake, there is a unity of combination of colors that he painted green and orange colors for the plants on the mountains and blue for the lake, there is also a unity on the pattern of movement of the water that looks the water wave is moving towards the painter which also indicates the direction of the wind is towards the views or the painter. There is a variety on the size of the surrounding mountains and the type of plants surrounding the lake. In Chang’s Lotus China work there is a unity of black lotus flowers on the left corner and gray lotus flowers next to it. The color combination gives the painting a feeling of winter or night time view with shadows of the flowers. The two dimensionalities of the Mountain lake, the surrounding mountains and beautiful plants emphasize the lake and gives the painting more details and beautiful view. But in the case of Lotus China, there is a unity in color pattern that is dominated by a gray lotus flower on the center and towards the upper left corner and black on the lower left corner of the bottom.

Stand there, right in front of the painting; what do you see? Look closely, very closely and see the paint on the canvas flow through each brush stroke, see the colors expand and blur, and see how the lights play off the soft, vibrant colors. Watch the swirls expand out into an infinite space in time . The paint flies beyond the canvas and the shadows and reflections blur into one. The pinks, blues, reds, yellows, oranges, purples, and browns blend together to create a symphony of colors.…

In this painting, the main colors are shades of white and blue, accented with lavenders and yellows along with some green, brown, and black tones. Due to the environment being painted, most of the colors are cool (the blues, lavenders, and green) or neutral (the white, brown, and black shades), with the exception of the yellow shades, which are warm. The sky, which gradients from a deep cornflower blue to a golden yellow, makes the start white tones of the icebergs and snow field stand out. On the snow field itself, variations in color show ripples and crests on the surface of the ground: shades of lilac provide shadows in low areas, while an off white tone washes the sunny areas.…

Hung Liu decided to paint this using oil on a canvas. By her using this media it made it appear as if it was photograph. This allowed the viewer to get a flash of the past since it made it look antique and the dripping effect by the oil further contributed to that very thing. Hung Liu style is quite impressive as well. Throughout most of her paintings she uses oil canvas and frequently has a great deal of contrast of colors within them.…

As the final feudal dynasty the Qing dynasty ensued through a period of destruction and bloodshed, it became a time of change. A people from northeast China called the Manchus overtook the Ming dynasty, and while there was resistance for the first forty years from the literati, it eventually died down, allowing the rulers to relax and become fervent patrons of the arts. When the Qing dynasty transpired, Jesuit missionaries had already been in China for years, but their influence hit its peak during the High Qing period of 1736-1795, where under Emperor Qianlong China entered a time of “...political, economic, and cultural supremacy, in which the empire’s boarders were expanded.” (Barnhart 252) Due to this change of ruler, the European missionaries,…

The traditional view of art has changed over time just as most things have. Naturally, the act of perception has differed opinions on what society considers as art. Dance, paintings, photography, drawings, music, literature, and sculpting, are what comes to mind when contemplating the aspects of art. The limitation to defining a word so opinionated leaves out room for self-expression. The traditional ideas of what is considered art should be broadened; granted, although not tangible, art can be seen through ambitions, emotions, and expression through appearances when not limited to the customary definition.…

In her 2006 article “The Trouble with (the Term) Art”, Carolyn Dean argues that the using the word “art” for both past visual expressions (particularly nonwestern) does not quite capture the true definition of what these pieces are. This argument is valid, to consider these works as mere entertainment erases a culture’s true history and identity. Dean has a very strong argument for the analysis and retirement of the term “art”, however the ideas surrounding the concept of “art” explain the larger issue as a whole. Carolyn Dean argues that pinning the recent idea of “art” on nonwestern works does not inform one about the culture, but rather condenses that culture into easily defined novelties.…

Later, with the development of science and technology, the painter's understanding of light gradually in-depth, and the relationship between light and color is also more profound understanding, so this time the Western landscape painting color expression is more abundant. Through the works of Monet we can see the Western landscape painting on the color performance of the meticulous and beautiful. Art image is to express the communication between the heart and the outside world, "dare to use the stylized, decorative and exaggerated deformation of the way, for the object vivid, for the author to express"; created a unique "white when the black" aesthetic concept, Therefore, the color of Chinese landscape painting is based on ink, supplemented by color, this simplification of the creation method is more in line with the Chinese Confucianism and Taoism pursued by the kind of plain mean, pure heart of the realm. Chinese painting is a multi-ink painting, but it is not aversion and exclusion of color, but rather a pale and heavy color painting. In the relationship between ink and color, one is based on the ink, supplemented by color; the other is the ink does not touch the color, the color does not touch the ink, mutual infringement complement each…
