There’s no mistaking the love that Santiago and Manolin have for each other and the same is true between Forrester and Jamal. Both mentors in this case are very much alone. They do not let very many people close to them but for some reason they had no problem with their little boys. This may be because Forrester and Santiago are extremely wise. Jamal and Manolin know this and respect them for it deeply. The boys look up to them like a dad figure in a way no one else has before. Everyone fights battles but most do not show theirs, the men were not afraid to show the boys their struggles because they knew it would teach them something valuable. The relationships between Santiago and Manolin and Forrester and Jamal are not common yet very much the same.
The idea of a code hero is present in both The Old Man and the Sea and Finding Forrester because of the character qualities and relationships. When piecing apart the story lines, the two are very similar. It’s almost like they were based off of each other.
