The story starts out with two waiters talking about a old man who always comes to their café and has a habit of getting drunk and staying there till late in the morning to the discomfort of the workers. As the story goes on the fact that the old man has tried to kill him self the younger waiter clams that the old man has no right to try to kill him self because he has money, family, and a home. This idea of death is one that was seen widely at the end of the Great war, because the old man has no real reason to be depressed in their eyes.
