Erikson's Theory (Late Adulthood only) Erikson’s eighth stage is Integrity vs despair, which is experienced in late adulthood. The purpose of this stage is to reflect on the past and either piecing together a positive review or concluding that their life has not been well spent. In each previous period if the older adult has developed a positive outlook, they may experience retroactive glances and will reveal a life well spent, and the older adult will be satisfies. Furthermore, what could also happen includes: the older adult resolving an earlier period in a negative way, which will make them portray a negative worth of their life.
