We now see Mason going into middle school. Various changes are noticeable. He grew taller, his voice is heavier and his personality changed. Erickson’s theory of Industry versus Inferiority is applied here. Since this stage does not focus on the physical changes but on the socioemotional factors that affect the psychological growth. It is at this stage that the child’s peer group will gain greater significance and will become a major source of the child’s self esteem. The child now feels the need to win approval by demonstrating specific competencies that are valued by society, and begin to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments (McLeod, 2013). This theory applies to Mason during the time when his friends and himself are out camping. He spends most of time with his friends, therefore they play an important role in how he progresses through the industry versus inferiority stage. From a normal average fun loving child we see Mason transforming into a quiet, calm but sad looking boy. When he was a young boy, like other children is seen riding a bike, graffiti, looking into a magazine. But his behavior changed as he visualizes the behavior of adult around him. He seems to have become more resilient. He does not open up with other people. It also seems that he keeps his feelings to himself. His girlfriend felt that he is always goofy and thinks life is not as wonderful. Since Mason has seen multiple failed relationships of her mother, he seems to be apprehensive in committing to a relation. We have not seen Mason indulging in any kind of delinquent behavior. His relation with his father has shown positive influences on him, since his father was always involved in their life. This could be a reason why Mason did not indulge in any kind of bad behavior and turns out to be a quiet
