10:00-10:10am: I found 16 children and one teacher during my initial observations upon my arrival to Ms. Hicks’s classroom. Ms. Hicks was stationed in the corner cutting up some color construction paper. From this observation it appeared to me that it the paper she was cutting was going to be used for a future art project or something. Also, there were four groups of children that were working in various activities simultaneously (pattern blocks, wood sticks, listening center, blocks and Legos). Next, I noticed that the teacher had set five learning targets on the board, but I was unclear about if it was for the day or longer. I made a note to touch base with Ms. Hicks about it later on. When Cassandra was at the table playing and building with Legos, I noticed how her demeanor and attitude would easily change. On the one hand, I saw her collaborating, sharing, and giving feedback. On the other hand, she would look confused, isolated and timid to give suggestion. Also, I found Cassandra to be more willing to take the initiative when she was working with the boys, yet when working with other female students she was more hesitate to take the lead in making choices. From these initial observations it appears to me that Cassandra’s behavior might be influenced by gender. However, I am not sure why that was. I honestly would like to see if there is a pattern with future observations. Moreover, I also thought that Cassandra did not feel as confident or energetic around her teacher. One lingering question that I have is what kind of student Cassandra will be as she continues to learn more complex materials with different
