Unit One Essay
Eric Scholasser was born August 17, 1959 in Manhattan, New York. He received his graduate degree from Oxford. Scholasser is an American journalist and author who have won the National Magazine Award and the Sidney Hillman Foundation Award. Scholasser is also known for his investigative journalism in his books Fast Food Nation, Reefer Madness, and Command and Control: Nuclear Weapons along with many other books he has written. Scholasser’s rhetorical purpose was to get people to see how fast food has shaped the society around them and also that people need to know all that is involved in the fast food industry.

In his book he describes the environment in which undocumented workers have to work. Scholasser states that the kill floor (the place in which the workers kill the animals) is hot, humid and reeks of manure. In the kill room one has to be careful and watchful, if not he or she will be hit by the caucuses and thrown to the concrete floor. Scholasser says that “they take whatever you give them, and then, if there are is a better offer, they leaving you hanging and move on to the next best deal”. He uses this statement to appeal to the reader’s fear of rejection of losing something very important regardless of how hard one has worked for it. Scholasser emphasizes his point of the spread of bacteria in the meat by using the metaphor “you are better off eating a carrot stick that fell in your toilet than in your sink.” He was making a bold statement to the readers to bring disgust and awareness about the products that are in fast food. One really important way Scholasser uses pathos to get the readers in tuned about unfortunate situations in the food industry is when he discusses a boy named Alex who was infected with E. coli. Alex suffered from hallucinations and dementia and can no longer recognize his mother and father. It states to the readers that some of the products in fast food that is sold to people might not be the best thing to
