Eric Harris Research Paper

Eric Harris kept extensive documentation of his thoughts and plans on his website. Although it did not include his motives like his journal, the ‘blog’ included statements about his making of pipe bombs. The parents of Brooks Brown, Judy and Randy, notified the police of the website. Eric unintentionally gave law enforcement a written confession of his intent to kill, two years before the massacre (165). The actions of the police during this period seemed less urgent than it should have been. After discovering the website, Deputy Mark Burgess was faced with overwhelming evidence against Eric Harris. He printed out pages from Eric’s website, made a report, and sent it to his superior, Investigator John Hicks. Burgess, however, did not …show more content…
An investigator from the local bomb squad confirmed that it was a pipe bomb. The investigator defused the bomb and filed a report. Although the bomb was an unusual sighting and potentially deadly, there was presumably no further investigation (215). This seems peculiar, to not follow through with an abnormal finding. However, this shows consistency within the police force in Littleton, Colorado; nearly every piece of evidence concerning Eric Harris was not investigated, before the attack. If, hypothetically, the investigation about the pipe bomb had been carried through, Eric would have likely been charged with a felony. Additionally, if the bomb discovery was coupled with the discovery of his website, heavy action would have been taken against Eric. Wayne Harris, Eric’s father, discovered one of Eric’s pipe bombs. Wayne either got rid of or detonated the bomb; presumably, he did not take any further action against Eric, and did not record the incident in his journal on Eric (198). Chris Morris started hanging out with Eric and Dylan more during Freshman year (136). Later on, Morris was seen as more of an acquaintance than a friend (210). Morris was aware of

His defense argued that he was not eligible for death row because of his mental state.
