To begin with, the case I decided to write about is the Eric Garner case which I feel strongly about. This incident took place in Staten Island, New York on July 17th 2014. It all started when the police officers approached Mr. Garner about selling untaxed cigarettes and tried making an arrest. Eric Garner then tried to explain to the law enforcement officers that he hasn’t done anything. As the officer tried to make an arrest with resistance from the victim, he then wrapped his arm around the 43 year old’s neck. Remember, there are two officers on the scene. According to New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said, “That no local laws criminalize chokeholds, though they are prohibited by his department. In fact, the NYPD could discipline Pantaleo or his fellow officers if an ongoing internal review finds their actions did not align with police department procedures.”(Los Angeles Times). Even though there are numerous police departments that still use the chokehold method, the NYPD banned this action in 1993. There are several incidents in New York that resulted in the death of someone by a chokehold and almost none of the officers involved got indicted for their actions. For example, on April 30, 1994, 23 year old Ernest Sayon died from the police applying pressure to the young man’s back and chest. Did any of the police officers get indicted? Of course not, the six officers involved got to walk away from the death they caused.

Also, the fact that the officers didn’t try to resuscitate Mr. Garner as shown in the video. Instead they sat and waited around until ambulance arrived. I am pretty sure if they did in fact try CPR then he might still be here. I know that there are two sides to a story and both parties was wrong in the situation. I’m sure if Eric wouldn’t have resisted arrest in the first place then he would more than likely still be here today. On the other hand, the officers could have found a safer way to try and take him down in order to make an arrest.
