Eric Battleaxe: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Eric Battleaxe stood on guard like he was always trained to do. He didn’t know which came first, but the one thing he did know how to do was wield the axe and he wielded it well. His small elven body was taut and toned, dressed in the tunic and small battle armor of the elven army of which he was a lowly private. Destined to fall in one of the small and petty wars that were always waged in the underworld, fought since the dawn of the sundering for no other reason than a few acres of land or a better access to the river, his sworn duty was the same as his families for eons and that was to defend the expanse of Lord Corelion unto death.

Depravity and rapine were the call of the land and was now the expectation more than a choice. Lord Corelion

Her small elven body moving lithely as she shopped for the sweet meats, her waxen hair, sun dipped spraying and molding a heart shaped face. One that he would worship and adore……..but only from afar. Stalking was a harsh word, but he had followed her for days, until she had been taken from his part of the city. Despite their being of the same type of race, their gazes would never rest on each other, for she was going to be a priestess and he was a serf..... and would always be a serf.

Broken from his thoughts, he heard noises. He would never know if he imagined them or if he heard them, but he looked down at the river and the voice emanated from a patch that he couldn’t take observation of. The noise again made his decision for him as he removed the small bow from his back and replaced it with his too large battleaxe and moved surreptitiously down the path that led to the clear pool of

It was a dark monster of Lolth defiling in the most horrible manner one of the female elves. He reached in his quiver and his training took over as he loosed first one and then a second and third arrow at the monster as he moved forward, dropping the bow and reaching for his trusty battleaxe. The arrows shot too far away to strike their mark, but certainly close enough to give pause to whatever the monster was doing and turn his attentions towards the Battleaxe.

An elven roar came from his lips as he charged at his enemy, who was looking up from his prey at the small elf charging at him. The beast still had a knife at her throat, Eric could now see a tiny spool of blood dripping from her neck as his helmet went askew on his head. He adjusted it, allowing the dark light to capture the unique steel of his battleaxe as he was now 20 yards from his adversary.

“Unhand her and submit” was all he could think to say as the much taller and larger creature turned to face
