Eratosthenes, a Greek mathematician, geographer, and astronomer, was born c276 BC in Cyrene and died c194 BC. Cyrene, modern day Libya, was during time the center of knowledge and Eratosthenes received training in certain course at a young age. After receiving training in Cyrene, Eratosthenes traveled to Athens where he expanded his knowledge. During his time in Athens, he learned from and worked under many great mathematicians. Eratosthenes then traveled to Alexandria where he spent most of his adult life at and where he sadly passed away. His time in Alexandria he was appointed by Ptolemy III as the librarian for the Alexandrian Library and this is when he wrote about the world in his work called Geography and many other works (Masjid). …show more content…
In mathematics, Eratosthenes calculated the Earth’s circumference by measuring the shadow of different points in Syene and in Alexandria. He then compared those points to find the circumference of Earth which was nearly correct. He concluded the distance between Syene to Alexandria, the angle of elevation of the Sun, and these factors came together to help him conclude the circumference of Earth (Crystal). Another contribution Eratosthenes had in mathematics was his method that finds prime numbers called Sieve of Eratosthenes. This method helps with a way to find all prime number up to a specific integer (Torretti). Eratosthenes contributions to Geography was creating maps of the Rive Nile route, map of the known world during that time and he also came up with system of latitude and longitude (Russell). Also, an interesting fact about Eratosthenes was that he was the first to use the word geography (Crystal). Eratosthenes contributions to Astronomy was his star catalog that contained 675 stars, his invention of the Armillary sphere which is a mechanical device that helped with the demonstration and prediction of motions of the different objects in space, and some say he was measured the distance from Earth to the Moon and Sun (Masjid). The sphere is made up of ball that represents Earth or the Sun and many circles to represent the equator, ecliptic, meridian, and

the central angle, which gives 7.19 as the degree measure. The order in which the measurements were discovered may be different than Eratosthenes, but it will still give people the same angle that he had discovered over 2000 years ago. It is mind boggling that with little to no outside resources he was able to come up with the calculation of the Earth’s circumference as 40,000 km, compared to a more accurate measure of 40,030.2 km, (4). By knowing that his data for the circumference of the Earth was around 40,000 km, we just divide that number by 2 to give us 20,000 km, for his estimated radius of the Earth. This estimated radius of 20,000 km is not that far off from…

Claudius Ptolemaeus was an Egyptian mathematician, astronomer, and geographer who prospered in Alexandria during the second century CE. He was the author of numerous scientific treatises, of which three of those are still of importance to European and Islamic science. Almagest (astronomical treatise) is the first, the second being the Geography, a complete discussion of the knowledge of geography of the Roman world. Tetrabiblos (astrological treatise) is the third one. In Ptolemy’s mathematical field, the one that is the most famous may be Ptolemy's Theorem, which is the relation between two diagonals of a cyclic quadrilateral and the four sides (a quadrilateral whose vertices lie on a common circle). This theorem has several useful corollaries;…

Although early Greek philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander, and Xenophanes introduced ‘new’ philosophical concepts to society, many of their thoughts or ideas were similar to or dependent on earlier traditions. Thales was known for his answers to questions relating to the geography of the cosmos. As opposed to the Greek thought that the Earth was like a column surrounded by water, Thales claimed that the Earth floats on water. He used this concept to explain what supports the Earth, and to explain natural phenomena such as earthquakes.…

Pythagoras was the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician who lived in the sixth century B.C. In mathematics, the Pythagorean theorem is known as a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three sides of a right triangle. This theorem was named after him. For example, a right triangle is a triangle with a right angle; square corners adjacent sides also called square corners of the triangle beside it; hypotenuse is the side opposite the right angle. In the figure below, a and b are adjacent sides (square corners), c is the hypotenuse: Pythagoras theorem stated his name in the plane geometry view via the purple square area (c) with a total area of red square (b) and blue (a).…
