The most prominent theme in Eragon is good vs evil. The idea of this theme is to explain that: wherever evil exists, the good side will always succeed. Christopher Paolini cleverly utilises characterization to set each character in either the good or evil category. The evil side in Eragon is represented through Galbatorix and his tyrannical Empire and the good is represented by the rebellious Varden and how they are fighting for their freedom by trying to rid Alagaesia of this tyrant. These are the two greatest military groups in Alagaesia (the setting of Eragon). Whereas Galbatorix forced his way to become the Emperor through fear, the Varden was formed by a group of good souls who saw the significance in uniting all races together to defeat

When Eragon saw the pile of dead bodies at Yazuac, he questioned Brom - "Who could have done… He could not force out the words.’’ Brom’s response was ‘’those who love the pain and suffering of others." Brom is referring to Durza and his Urgals and is implying that they are pure evil. Galbatorix has hired these types of men because he himself is evil and does not care about the wellbeing of others. Not even if they’re his own people. That becomes evident through the use of another quote - ‘’Why would he commit such an atrocity on his own subjects? Because he is evil, stated Saphira flatly.’’ Galbatorix is so selfish and evil, he does not even care if he is sending his own people to their deaths. However, that is the reason why Eragon is so determined to defeat him. It is the simple fact that Galbatorix’s evil inspires him to stand up and fight - ‘’He had witnessed too many wrongs committed in Galbatorix's name, from murder to slavery, to turn his back on the Empire.’’ He feels that it is his responsibility as the only other Dragon Rider to fight against Galbatorix. From these quotes, we can deduct that there is no limit to how low Galbatorix will stoop to fight his opponents. Without realising, Galbatorix is actually inspiring the Varden to fight against him.
