Equity and equality are often mistaken to be the same thing however, both are there for their own purpose. Equity on one hand, is beneficial for society, improves the quality of life and is fair for all. On the other hand, equality promotes being the same and having the same starting point and the same treatment no matter the circumstances. Equity should be put above equality in Canada to make the quality of life better and fair for all. It is used everyday through various ways, provides everyone with many opportunities to reach their goal, and benefits people more than equality does.

To start with, Canada’s Labour Program states that one of the designated groups under the Equity Employment Act includes members of visible minority to ensure that all races have an equal given chance at a job opportunity (2015). In order to remove biased judgement raised from an employer’s perspective, the visible minority is given a designation in which they can prove themselves worthy of a job. Furthermore, fairness between the sexes is kept with equity by giving men and women the same amount of “usefulness” within an environment (e.g. workplace, school, family). According to Vanessa Lu, women at Canada Post would make less than men for doing the same job and did not appreciate being seen as useless. However, with sex equity, neither sex is considered to be “less useful” than the other, and can be given a chance to prove themselves capable of whatever the other can do. Additionally, Canada’s Labour Program also protects people with disabilities to ensure that they are not seen as incapable to do a job. People with disabilities are given the chance to fight for their right to a job opportunity with the help of the Equity Employment Act (2013). To start off, in a workplace, each gender is given equal employment opportunities for a fairer workplace with equal opportunities. Due to gender equity, a workplace can have better relationships formed between employees as no one has it “better” than another. Additionally, the Equity Employment Act ensures that certain groups, such as: Aboriginal People, women, people with disabilities, and members of visible minority can hold arguments with regards to the employment in which they believe they are being discriminated for. As a result, these groups of people can benefit because this Act gives them the opportunity to achieve a job under the same fairness as any other group (York University, page 247). Moreover, according to the CAAWS, equity allows people to achieve their goal by giving them the opportunities to get there (2015). Given that equity helps everyone reach their goal, it is easier for a person to bypass discrimination and avoid problems to get to their end goal quicker.
