Equip for Equality (EFE) is an organization located in downtown Chicago whose primary objective is to ensure that people with disabilities rights are protected. They accomplish this goal by encouraging the person to advocate for themselves. They provide legal services while staying informed on procedures and changing laws regarding those with disabilities. They also offer training in many areas. Those areas include legal rights, job training, and even effective teaching strategies that can be used in the classroom for children with exceptionalities. Margie Wakelin currently works for EFE as one of two supervising attorney’s. Her primary role is to make sure that the other lawyers have the support they need in order to service the clients. They were able to integrate people with disability in the community. EFE has gone up against charter schools and their lack of providing services to children. They also have several on-going lawsuits that primary purpose is to ensure that persons with disabilities are able to live a life of inclusion. When Ms. Wakelin was asked what the sets them apart from other agencies she replied, “We are an advocate for those with exceptionalities from birth to adulthood from the classroom to the workforce.” Because of EFE strong community and school presence many children and families are referred to EFE. Equip for equality assist parents with finding information and resources and will often utilize their lawyers to advocate on behalf of the family at no cost. EFE is successful in what they do for families because everyone has the same goal and vision of the organization. They believe that every child adds value to the world we live
