She knows the horse might be a racehorse and purchases her from the kill buyer. Gail Vacca, the president of the Illinois Equine Humane Center, believes horses should not suffer in the conditions in which they are kept. I agree with Vacca’s actions and decisions of rescuing a kill market horse. Vacca’s views on kill pens show through as she describes the treatment of animals at “Shipshy” the biggest market horse auction in the Midwestern United States.…

Veterinary Office Management Research Project There are a slew of programs that are offered to aid in the veterinarian office. The purpose of the evaluation of software is to explain the difference in software and how it can work for each practice 's individual needs. Many programs are offered for veterinarian software, however, only a few stood out to me, they were AVImark, EzyVet, and IntraVet. Most all the programs that are on the market do about the same, from creating invoices, being backed up, and importing lab results.…
This report is about a farm in Montana that has new epidemic that has spread to the owners of the farm and the horses; I have been assigned to characterize the epidemic and to decrease its spread to the nearby farms. By finding out the pathogen and source it will stop the spread of the virus and save the most lives. The owner of the farm and some their workers have been showing signs of flu-like symptoms. Two of the workers are having symptoms of a more severe nature, gastric distress and altered mental status.…
The misconception with equine slaughtering is rooted deep in what really happens. Imagine hundreds of horses, some retired champions, a little girl’s pony, or horses who did nothing wrong, all bound for slaughter that are packed in trucks and shipped for more than twenty four hours at a time, without food, water, or rest. Fear runs through their veins. As it should, because the method used to exterminate these animals, after the long journey, are far from painless and sometimes they even remain conscious during the dismemberment process (ASPCA).…
Eighteen day old, Mariana Sifrit died Tuesday morning from the HSV-1 virus, commonly known as bacterial meningitis. Upon noticing that Mariana had refused to eat and wake up while at their wedding, newlyweds Nicole and Shane Sifrit, rushed Mariana to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa, where she was diagnosed with the herpes virus, mostly likely contracted by kiss; both parents tested for herpes and results were negative. Because a newborn’s first month of life is when the infant is most at risk to contract serious illnesses as bacterial meningitis, it is extremely important to stay vigilant for conditions that could put an infant at risk. The herpes virus can potentially develop into meningitis, and in Mariana’s case, she had contracted meningitis which caused serious complications. As Mariana’s condition rapidly deteriorated, she was airlifted to University of Iowa’s Children’s Hospital to be stabilized and undergo dialysis for liver failure.…

Equine therapy comes in many different forms and because of this is an effective therapy for treating multiple physical and mental issues. It is often used as a therapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, special needs, eating disorders, behavioral issues, and life threatening illness. Equine therapy is effective to treat mental illness because the horses give the patients hope, happiness, and higher self esteem (Dixon). Even the environment helps relax the clients. Being in an open quiet field with a horse helps people forget the problems they face (Boatwright).…
Spillover is not just a regular book about diseases. In this book, the author, David Quammen, dialogues about a multitude of zoonotic diseases, which are pathogens that can be transmitted from an animal into a human. There are eleven diseases that the author primarily discusses: Hendra, Ebola, Malaria, SARS, Q-fever, Psittacosis, Lyme disease, Herpes B, Nipah and HIV/AIDS. All of these are viruses, with the exceptions of Q-fever, Psittacosis and Lyme disease, which are bacterium. All zoonotic diseases have a reservoir host, which is a living organism that carries a certain pathogen without suffering from it.…
Conditioning your horse properly is very important to not only the health of the horse, but the welfare as well. It affects many important internal systems in their bodies as well as their comfort and stamina. How do you know when your horse is in good condition? A horse in good condition when he is capable of doing an appropriate amount of work for his stage of training or discipline, and willingly does the work you are asking of him. He will also be thriving, and appear happy with bright eyes and a shiny healthy glow.…
To Vaccinate or Not to Vaccinate? Every horse owner will struggle with vaccinations to some degree. There are so many vaccinations available to horse owners. Drug companies and some veterinarians may push these vaccinations for financial gain, personal belief, or some other reason.…
Feline Immunodeficiency VirusThe Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) was first isolated from cats in 1986 and wasdiscovered due to an outbreak of FIV infected cats housed together in several pens (Pederson112). FIV belongs to the family Retroviridae, the subfamily Orthoretrovirinae, and the genusLentivirus (Taniwaki et al. 551-552). Being that FIV is a lentivirus, this means that it’s a “slowvirus” with long incubation periods that could last for years (CFHC). FIV is present worldwideand “in the United States, approximately 1.5 to 3 percent of healthy cats are infected with FIV”(CFHC). The virus is very similar to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).Transmission of infectious diseases usually occur through the shedding of the pathogen inthe…
Genesis of a Virus: Vaccines a Double-Edged Sword if Not Careful Defective vaccines may lead to even more powerful viruses and ‘hot’ viral strains, according to a new study. Perfect” vaccines have been protecting humans against polio, mumps, measles or smallpox, but it’s the “leaky” ones, which we may have to start worrying about. Imperfect vaccines might pose a threat for future development, researchers found.…
Topic: Adopting and Rescuing Animals Specific Purpose: To persuade my effective speaking class the benefits of adopting a pet over buying one from a breeder or pet store. Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying. INTRODUCTION Attention-Getter: According to Humane Society of the United States organization’s website I accessed on December 6, 2016, “Each year, 2.7 million adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States, simply because too many pets come into shelters and…
