Equally Divided

Some may argue and say that treating all people equally is morally correct. However, other may insist that all individuals are and should be treated fairly depending on their own distinct situations. I tend to side with the latter and agree with Thomas Jefferson whom paraphrased Aristotle’s thought; not all persons are created or should be treated equally.
While discussing this topic, one should take different sides into perspective. The initial thought that comes to mind when hearing that there should be equal treatment of unequal people are those persons with disabilities. A child with learning disabilities is often placed in a classroom setting that will allow them to receive the additional attention give them their own “equal” opportunity

Those living in poverty cannot be held in the same tax bracket as those who are graciously wealthy. Whether a family has an annual income of $30,000 or $300,000, the taxes paid cannot be equal.
Let’s now consider a victim of sexual abuse or child pornography then imagine them being in their school’s locker room where it is required that all students change into their uniforms for Physical Education. A victim of these heinous crimes will mentally want to die or crawl into a ball and hide rather than expose themselves in front of more people they do not know or trust. An individual with such a horrid past should be granted privacy to change rather than subject them to more pain and suffering.
While the goal of fairness to all may be the ultimate objective of any situation, it is very important to understand that not all persons are in fact equal. Whether it be their race, color, size, economic standing, learning abilities, or treacherous past, we must all understand that not all individuals are equal. Thomas Jefferson had the correct thought process when stating, “some, argue that it is not Fair to treat all people the same, since all people are not the same.” We are not all equal regardless of many people’s

Is Everyone Really Equal? A Student’s Response to Chapter 3 and 4 Is Everyone Really Equal is a novel by Ozlem Sensoy and Robin DiAngelo that introduces individuals to concepts that are fundamental in helping to understand and become involved in social justice education. The chapters of the book are based off of these key concepts that vary from oppression and power to racism, each divulging into several subsections that explain these words to their core and their understanding in a social reference frame. I believe that both Sensoy and DiAngelo are right in what they discuss within the lines of their book, but my criticism lies in their definitions of these key concepts and their arguments to help prove their viewpoint.…

In the world today everyone believes in treating each other as equal as possible, but the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel portrays a time where this was not the case. The true power of dehumanization is displayed throughout the book. The story follows Elie’s journey as a Jew during the Holocaust, from his hometown of Sighet, Transylvania up to his liberation from a concentration camp in Buchenwald, Germany. Although Elie faced some of the worst the world has to offer; starvation, loneliness, and losing his family, perhaps what had the strongest impact on his life was the dehumanization he endured from the Germans. Contrary to many beliefs of dehumanization only having a minor impact on an individual, Elie Wiesel demonstrates the truth…

Thomas Jefferson, quoting “There is nothing more unequal than the equal treatment of unequal people”. Thinking about this quote, my point of views concerning this quote is that one of the dreadful and awful things that a human being can do to another human being is to mistreat that individual and attempt to make the unequal treatment equal. For centuries, humans have always mistreated others because of class, skin color, or education status. According to the biblical world view, Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them to do to you. This was my mothers favorite bible vs.…

People living in America today are not equal the reason is because some people are more important than others were the law will be in favor of them. It’s impossible, of all men to be created equal because there are people who get away. Thomas Jefferson was a slave owner when he and the founding father agreed that “All Men Are Created Equal.” Which means that when they wrote the constitution, they were not referring to the black slave but they were referring to the white man who owned slaves and property. “In the late…

In our courts, all men are created equal In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus says, “our courts are great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal” (274). This statement is true because of many different reasons. As of today people try to stay as equivalent as possible, but when the time comes, everyone has to treat each other the same. If you don't treat everyone in the same manner, then there can be some major consequences.…

Furthermore, Coates asserts that discrimination is erroneous and wonders why he cannot live free due to race. In short, this essay analyzes Coates perspective on discrimination with my support. I found a very interesting article in the Capella library. The article is called “Nature vs. Nurture in Special Education”. The article states that “schools are organized as if nature has already won the contest (Marks, S. U. (2009)). This is so significant with school systems today, because it is the truth. A child who has a disability is almost always put into a special education class.…

In the article Rough Justice by Alejandro Reyes “No matter how harsh your punishments, you’re not going to get an orderly society unless the culture is in favor of order.” It is important for people to take a stand on issues of justice in society. Three reasons it is important for people to stand on issues of justice in society is that people should stand up to change things that are wrong and turn them right, people represent others who can’t represent themselves, and people should be treated equally. People should stand up to change things that are wrong and turn them right, “We are not subjects, you are not the sovereign either, so long as it is your endevour to control us with justice and love, we will let you do so.”…

People should not be treated differently just because of their skin color, are skin color is what makes us unique and different than everyone else we wouldn’t want to all look the same. It was unfair how blacks had to sit in the back of the bus and whites got to sit in the front, you should be able to sit where ever you want and blacks should not have to move there seat if a white person wants to sit there. I also feel that it was unfair that blacks and whites had different bathrooms and water bubblers. For example if a black and white both apply for the same job a white person might have a higher chance of getting the job because of their skin color. Even if the black person is smarter and better at the job than the white person they still might choose the white person over the black person because people believe that whites are better than blacks.…

The starting point is to imagine every person in the United States lining up for a parade similar to that of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade held annually in New York City. This parade would be a single file line of citizens arranged in accordance with their annual income. The parade would start with those making the least amount followed by those who make more, viz., the lowest earners in front, and the highest earners in back. The parade would be one hour in length.…

Richard Lavoie defines fairness in the classroom as “Everyone gets what she/he needs”. It does not mean that everyone gets the same and fairness depends on needs. He went on to say that as adults, it is not fair to say things to children that we would not say to another adult. Lavoie gives parents advice about fairness among the children at home. He says that if one of the children has special needs and requires more attention than the other, the parents should not try to make up the time with the others.…

Keith Jones, another individual with disabilities would go on to share a very interesting viewpoint of the education system. As an African-American, Keith described many of the unique situations he went through in his life related to his disability. This brought to light another issue where individuals with disabilities are often discriminated against by not only their disability, but also through other areas easily targeted by prejudice. Keith’s story did indeed raise another even deeper question for the audience, how do we provide an equal and positive educational experience for those with disabilities while also keeping in mind many of the already present prejudices within the world we live in? Is there a way we can help dispel many of these already horrific prejudices while also providing the best educational experience for everyone?…

Many people have different viewpoints on what fairness is. My viewpoint on fairness is the treatment or behavior without favoritism or discrimination. Fairness is when everyone is treated equally no matter where they come from, their race, their age, their gender, their height, their weight, their culture, and etc. In my words, fairness isn't everybody getting the same thing, fairness is everybody getting what they need in order to be successful. Fairness is when 2 different types of people get paid the same amount of money.…

Throughout many years of history, those with disabilities were not always treated fairly or given equal opportunity. Activists around the world have worked together to achieve goals such as increased access to all types of transportation and a safer day to day environment. Equal opportunities in employment and education have been a big part of their efforts too. For many years, children with disabilities were many times segregated and not given an equal opportunity for a chance to learn and succeed in school. A disability should not limit a person’s choice to improve themselves and their intellectual capabilities.…
