Equality vs. Society
“True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what’s good”(Young). This quote states that you need independence and individuality to be good, and that is exactly what Equality demonstrates. Anthem was written in 1938 by Ayn Rand who is from Saint Petersburg, Russia. Many novels first words have a huge impact on the entire story, this is especially true in the novella Anthem. “It is a sin to write this.” The opening line of Anthem suggests in the society there is a view of morality which Equality is opposing. It is also apparent Equality is not the average person, he is curious which makes him more of an individual. The significance of the opening line is to introduce Equality, the protagonist,and show how he is different. “But this is not the only sin upon us”(17). This quote explains that he is different because once he has committed his first sin he keeps sinning, unlike the majority of the society. The average person would do their best to not sin and they would try their hardest to redeem themselves of their sin. ‘“We are one in all and all in one. “I am. I think. I will”(Pg. 94). This explains that he has come to a final conclusion that it is not wrong to be an individual and he discovers how to use the word ‘I’. He has decided that this word is good and not an Unmentionable Word. This goes to show that he believes that the society is corrupt. “I owe nothing to my brothers, but such as each of them shall deserve me”(Pg.96). He now understands that the society's way of thinking is flawed and he doesn’t work for his brethren, but for himself. Everybody deserves to be an individual person. Conclusively, Equality’s assessment was that he was never doing anything wrong, but the society’s way of thinking, that individualism is bad, was
